9 Mistakes We Make with Our Email Marketing

The essence of using email marketing is to accomplish business goals. From growing our subscriber list to generating more sales, email marketing is the workhorse of our marketing plans. So, why is it that we keep making the same mistakes over and over? Perhaps it’s because we don’t even know we’re making them. I’ve compiled a list of 9 mistakes we make with our email marketing and quick tips to fix them. Read on.

1. Buying or renting an email list.
At VerticalResponse you can’t use our system to mail to a rented or purchased list. We do this because we know from more than 11 years in the email business, the best results come from lists that are grown the right way. When a customer or prospect opts in to hear from you, it’s their own choice to receive communication from you. Think about your own inbox and how you manage it. It’s likely that you look at the From Line and see if you know the sender. If not, chances are the message ends up in your trash or reported as SPAM.

2. Frequency – mailing too little or too much.
When a customer or prospect opts in to your mailing list you should have a statement about how often you plan to send email.
Stay current with email tips and best practices delivered once a week.
If you do this you’ll manage your subscribers’ expectations about how often they’ll hear from you. Now your end of the bargain is to keep that up. If you mail too infrequently, your subscribers will forget about you. If you mail too frequently, you may become annoying. The key is to deliver on what you promised. And, if for some reason that changes, communicate it to your subscribers so they know. Remember, being on your list is their choice and they can unsubscribe at anytime.

3. Having a lame subject line.
Your subject line is one of the single most important components of your email. Did you know that more than 50% of subscribers base their decision to open your message based on the subject line alone? So, you gotta deliver the goods in your subject line. 4. Not following best practices. Being in the email marketing business, I get a lot of email. And, I’m a picky reader/subscriber because of it. There are a few things I immediately scan an email for once I open it. Is there preheader text? The preheader serves as a secondary subject line to give your reader more context and more reason to open the email in the first place. Next, do the images have alt text? I can’t tell you how many times I get an email and the alt text says something like dog.jpg. Ack! Because many email browsers have images turned off by default, most readers will initially see your message this way.

So, don’t use the default file name. Instead, replace it with something more compelling related to your content like “25% off personalized dog name plates through Sunday.” See the difference? The second example provides relevant information. Every component of your email should be working toward your goal. Waste no space.

Also, is your email optimized to render on mobile devices? Sounds complicated but it’s not that hard, and of course we’ve got some easy to follow tips. Lastly, proofread your email from beginning to end. That includes the subject line. Read one word at a time so any mistakes will jump out at you. Recruit a diligent coworker or friend to be a fresh set of eyes for a final edit. Ask them to check for typos and grammar, and to click on every link. Use this handy checklist to make sure all your bases are covered before you hit launch.

5. No call-to-action. You take the time to build an engaged list of subscribers and then you create an email. But is it crystal clear to your readers what you want them to do with it? Is there a clear call-to- action? What is a call-to-action you might ask? In simple terms, it’s what you want the people who get your emails, visit your site or see your ads, to do. Your call-to-action can be as simple as a “buy now” graphic on a web page or in an email, a “Visit our website to get your 20% discount at www …” in a direct mail piece, or “Call 800…for your free…” Any way you display it, it needs to drive people to act, and act now!

You can communicate your call to action through your copy, your images, and even with web buttons that tell your reader what to do, like Read More, Buy Now, Learn More, Get the Deal. 6. Your links stink. How frustrating is it when you click on a link in an email and it’s broken? C’mon folks, we’re better than that. You want your subscribers to have a flawless experience so they can help you meet that goal. So test every link, every time you send an email. Also, go ahead, get bold and link your images. People want to click them, so allow them to and have them link somewhere relevant.

7. Target your list Does every person on your email list need to receive every message you send? Or can you get more strategic and target different offers or messages to different segments, or portions of your list based on location, prior purchases, etc.

For example, we recently wanted to invite customers to a special conference that was taking place in Austin, TX. Instead of sending it to every customer, we targeted those that lived in the closest proximity to where the conference was and would have the greatest propensity to attend.You can use our list segmentation tool to build different lists based on fields you have in your list.  

8. You’re not social. Adding social to your email mix can do a ton of good. You can expand the reach of your message to your social networks and possibly the people in your readers’ social networks when they share or like your message. We know none of our emails get a 100% open rate, so posting your messages to your Facebook Timeline, LinkedIn, or Twitter allows people to interact with your message in different ways.

Providing many channels for your message to be interacted with greatly increases your chances of people reading it and following the call to action. In fact, a recent VerticalResponse study showed that customers that used email and social marketing together achieved a 28% higher open rate on their messages!

  9. Your content sucks. Content is king for a reason. Because no matter what else, from your subject line to pretty pictures and perfect links, if your content sucks, no one is going to continue to read, let alone take your intended action. The best messages tell a story and tell it in a compelling way.  

One of my favorite examples is a winery that shot a video of a day in the life at the winery to link to from their email. The hook? The video was shot from the point of view of the winery’s dog! 10 E-Mail Marketing Mistakes  

Email marketing can be very cost-effective and productive if handled correctly. The proper approach to email starts with an ethical, well-thought-out plan and typically requires a little more time and effort than most email marketers realize.

Common Email mistakes include:

1. You do not have a permission-based mailing list. Unless you have the recipient’s permission, you may be sending spam, which is against the law. Too many business owners take shortcuts and buy e-mail lists or compile them in unethical manners, such as harvesting them from the Web. Spam also hurts the reputation of your business. The CAN-SPAM Act provides strict requirements about what you can and cannot do; for more information, go to the Federal Trade Commission Web site.  

2. Your content is poor or nonexistent. The more ads your e-mails contain, the faster people will hit delete them. E-mail marketers frequently send nothing of value to the reader. Just as people accept advertising and promotion in a magazine because they want to read the content, the same principle holds true in e-mail. You need to provide them with something that they desire. Interesting and topical content, albeit brief, should hold their attention long enough for you to market yourself successfully.  

3. Your emails are full of errors. The amount of errors found in e-mails is astonishing — words misspelled, poor grammar, links that do not work, and so on. These missteps, however slight, all signal a lack of professionalism. They can be easily avioded with some careful editing; don’t let these avoidable mistakes happen.  

4. You make readers jump through hoops. If you want someone to subscribe to an e-mail newsletter or sign up for updates about your product or service, do not make them fill out endless online forms, click through multiple pages, and provide unnecessary information. The more difficult you make it, the less likely they will be to subscribe. All you really need is their permission and their e-mail address.  

5. Your “from” and “subject” lines are poorly chosen. Pay particular attention to the “from” and “subject” lines, because often people will determine that they do not know the e-mail sender and delete it immediately. Be clear: The “from” line should be the exact company or newsletter name with which they signed up. The subject line can be the name of the newsletter or a well-thought-out, brief headline that grabs their attention.  

6. You do not test them first. Too often marketers learn the hard way — by lack of response — that their marketing strategy could have been better. E-mail newsletters are a perfect medium for testing different tacks. Before sending to your entire e-mail list, test out several subject lines, different content, and a few types of graphics and designs on a small number of people. You can tell how many e-mails were opened and which test group received the most responses.

7. You do not call to action. You can’t get results without a clear call to action. Do you want the reader to go to your Web site? Print out a page and send or fax it in? Buy something? Whatever you want them to do, make it clear and simple.

  8. You have not included landing pages. You need to pay attention to the key pages that people land on when they click on a link from your e-mail. All too often, it is mistakenly assumed that customers want to jump right to a shopping cart; in many cases, they are dumped on your homepage to find their way around. Take a lesson from Amazon — provide a landing page with more information for each product or service.  

9. Your graphics are overkill.Too many graphics, slow downloads, graphics that overshadow your message, and attachments will turn off readers. Again, keep it concise and simple.   10. You don’t give the people what they want. Too many newsletters focus on generic material or are all about your business. Give people something they can use — for example, provide information that makes them want to do business with you. Readers want to know what’s in it for them.

17-year-old Laura Deming

Laura Deming was studying for finals in a crowded MIT reading room last April when her phone rang. That’s when she learned she may never again take another exam.

Deming, only 17, had just been chosen by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel for a high-profile experiment: Put $100,000 apiece in the hands of 24 entrepreneurial teenagers and give them free rein to pursue innovative ideas.

The condition? Deming had to leave her studies and classmates, and vow to stay out of college during the two-year fellowship.

Thiel, who is PayPal’s co-founder and holder of two Stanford University degrees, says higher education today is in a “crazy bubble” that, like a bad mortgage, saddles students with tuition debt often for little in return. A vocal libertarian, Thiel, 44, takes the view that a college degree can be harmful to innovators because of the conservative, career-driven mindset it imparts.

“Youth have just as much intelligence and talent as older people,” says James O’Neill, head of the Thiel Foundation and managing director at Thiel’s investment fund, Clarium Capital. “They also haven’t been beaten down into submission by operating within an institution for a long time.”

Thiel has attracted critics for his anti-higher-education message. After all, not every young person is like Deming, a home-schooled prodigy who learned calculus at 11 and sought experience in a cutting-edge genetics lab at 12. That’s where she first had a chance to explore the science of extending the human lifespan, an idea she’s now hoping to turn into a business.

For Deming and her cohort, chosen from more than 400 applicants, the publicity around Thiel’s endorsement has been followed by some quick successes. Eden Full, 19, won a $260,000 social entrepreneurship award for her efforts to improve solar energy in developing countries. Dale Stephens, 20, landed a Penguin deal for his book Hacking Your Education.

Still, the foundation embraces the startup ethic that failure is inevitable, even desirable. So does John Deming, Laura’s father, an investor who moved the family to Boston when his daughter enrolled at MIT at age 14: “What I say to Laura is ‘The biggest problem you have so far, kid, is you haven’t failed yet.’”

After packing up her things at Sigma Kappa sorority, Deming moved across the country to a tiny room in a shared house in Palo Alto. Most days, she gets up before sunrise and heads out on foot to catch a commuter train to San Francisco, where she is talking to investors about a venture capital firm she wants to create to back research on new therapies for age-related diseases.

Because of SEC rules, Deming says she can’t go into details about the firm. But she jokes that one question now is whether to wait until her 18th birthday so that she can legally sign up investors or ask her father to do it. “The cool thing about Silicon Valley is that, though people might be skeptical of youth, they don’t actually know that you’re not smart enough or capable enough to make it work,” she says.

With startup success stories tempting undergraduates to quit, universities have raced to add entrepreneurship to their curricula. Stanford has StartX, an accelerator for student-run startups. Similarly, last year UC Berkeley created FounderSchool, which prepares students to raise venture money. James G. Boyle, managing director of the Entrepreneurial Institute at Yale University (which lost four undergraduate students to Thiel fellowships) agrees that more colleges should help kids start companies, but he says that most students benefit from an environment where they can test ideas without betting their future.

Deming doesn’t know yet whether she’ll ever go back to finish her college degree. “The funny part is I think I’ll miss studying for exams,” says Deming. “It’s the sort of thing that was very fun—like a sudoku puzzle or a crossword puzzle can be fun. But I thought that I could learn a lot more about the biotech industry and business by diving right into it.”

Backlinks Definition-
Backlink or link building is a general term used to describe the various strategies to be implemented in other to increase the incoming links to your site.

Backlinks is also known as inbound links or incoming links.

Types of Backlinks

For building backlinks there are different type and they are explained below.

One-way links: These are links from one or more pages of another website to yours without you linking back to that website.

Reciprocal links: Also referred to as link swapping, reciprocal link as the name sounds is a two way linking. You link to me, I link back to you.

Three – Way links: This is where I link to a site and instead of the owner of the site to link back to my site from that site that I linked to, he links to me from another of his site. This creates a one way link since the sites are not linking to each other.

The best links are one-way links where a webmaster links to you without you linking back.

If you are starting out with a PR0 blog with no backlinks,that is to say that your blog is brand new..Pls Do This…
Figure out your leading keyword and then write successions (10 or so) of huge posts about it. Don’t worry how well it reads either. Just include every possible important keyword (will people search for it?) you can think of in every post.

Use the keywords several times but make sure the main ones are in the post title, the first paragraph a couple of times and even bold them once for good measure. Use them again in your last paragraph. Make the posts looooooooooong! The longer they are the more terms you give Google to index you for.

Wait to get indexed or speed up the process by writing an article and submitting it to a high PR article directory, use squidoo or answer a question on Yahoo. The point is to get a link on a frequently crawled website which will send the Google bot your way. This will get you indexed fast. Do not submit your blog to Google – let them find you.

Do not monetize your blog in any way when starting out. I will speak more on this when I get to optimizing for adsense but for now don’t do it.

Be patient. Sooner or later a few visitors will find your site. Whatever keywords they used to find you become your new long tail and the next post will highlight that term. Get a backlink or two using that term and point it at the page it is on – not the homepage.

Keep repeating this. You will build up ranking in lots of really low searched terms and this will lead to seeing your pages indexed in higher searched terms. As you target each new one you will keep ranking higher for all the relevant terms and eventually you can dominate an entire niche doing this.

Besides targeting your pages with relevant backlinks you can further optimize them by rewriting them. Huh?

I don’t mean a full scale re-draft – just a few tweaks.

Simply add a few more related terms to your original post once you get a gist of what Google has ranked you for.
If you got a couple of visitors for a term and it is listed on page two in the serp’s you might be surprised at how many visitors you would get on page one. To do this change your original post title to include the search term that found you. Then add it a few more times in the first paragraph. Re-publish the post and watch what happens when you get crawled again.

Think of it this way. You got second page ranking for a long tail term that just happened to be in your post. Make it your title and reinforce it in your post and Google will rank it higher if for no other reason than it always ranks sites that use the search term in their title higher than sites who just happen to have it on the page somewhere.

If this doesn’t get you to the top of the search results then use the term or variant again in the next post title and optimize the content in the article for it. Write as many posts as it takes to get the top spot. Enough content will get you there without a single backlink.

The more competition there is for a term the more content it will take and eventually you will need backlinks but when starting out simply go after all the less competitive terms and build them up one by one.

This is how you can create traffic and dominate the search engines as a beginner.
The best way to get free traffic is to write articles and stick them on GoArticles.com or any of the other article publication sites. The reason is simple. You get to include a link to your website at the bottom of your article.

Blog with no Backlinks

This does two things for you. First you may get traffic if someone reading your article clicks your link to see what your website is all about. The best reason however is that the articles can be downloaded and used on other websites which will give you both traffic and more importantly a link pointing back to your website. The more people who put your article on their website means more backlinks. The more backlinks you have the higher your Google page rank will be.

The higher your page rank the higher your website will rank on the search engines and if you make it to page one on Google then the sky is the beginning of your dreams..
